Making
the Right Decision - Purchasing Advice
| What
to Expect in the Store
 |
Always
go to a reputable jeweler for
your fine jewelry purchase. Whitehouse
Brothers only sells through carefully
selected authorized retailers.
To locate a retailer in your area,
please use the Retailer
Locator. |
 |
Although sales
representatives are there to help
you make the right choice, the
more you know about fine jewelry
the better prepared you will be.
Many jewelers can order customized
designs adapted from the jewelry
you may see in the store itself
so being able to describe what
you are looking for is useful.
|
 |
If choosing an
engagement ring, you'll be faced
with decisions about the shape
of the diamond, and the setting
style. The diamond accounts for
an overwhelming majority of the
price of the ring, so choosing
platinum is the best choice to
keep it secure while enhancing
its beauty. For
helpful information about platinum
and other finishes click here.
|
 |
You will find that
some stores have insurance regulations
that limit the number of pieces
of jewelry they can bring out
on the counter for customers to
try on at one time. Also, due
to the custom nature of our jewelry,
your retailer may not have samples
of our entire collection. If you
are interested in a particular
style, your retailer can request
a particular sample, depending
on availability. |

The Anatomy of
an Engagement Ring
The parts and their purpose:
| |
The
Stone
will account for 75-90% of the
overall cost
of the ring. |
| |
The Setting
holds the center stone. A strong
precious
metal such as platinum is
imperative in securing your investment.
|
| |
The Band
will endure the most wear over
time since it's in constant contact
with the fingers and everything
that the hand touches. |
| |
The Hallmark
is the stamp that indicates the
type and purity of the metal.
|
|
|
Ring Settings
Each setting has its own
personality. Learn how to match the
perfect setting to your diamond and
to your personal style.
| |
Prong
The setting that lets the stone
be the most exposed. It's visible
from all sides for maximum sparkle
and light. |
| |
Cathedral/Contour
Similar to prong but with rising
slopes to protect the stone on
two sides. Elegant and a little
more secure. |
| |
Channel
Stones sit between two parallels
of metal. Visible, but not prominent.
Allows the metal and stone to
each have their own distinction. |
| |
Bead
Sophisticated, but subtle. Tiny
metal beads hold each stone in
its own discreet setting. Usually
used for setting melle, or smaller
cut diamonds. |
| |
Bezel
Common in filigree, a round piece
of platinum or gold holds the
center stone and sometimes other
side stones. |
| |
Flush
A high-impact, low-stress setting.
Offers the security setting stones
inside holes. The most common
setting style of traditional filigree
rings. |
